Sheep are far more cognitively sophisticated than their cultural reputation suggests. Research at the Babraham Institute has demonstrated that sheep can recognize and remember up to 50 individual sheep faces for over two years, as well as the faces of the humans they interact with regularly.

They experience a range of distinct emotions — optimistic and pessimistic states have been documented through behavioral testing, and they show measurable signs of depression when socially isolated. Sheep form close friendships within their flocks, and these bonds influence their behavior, stress responses, and overall health.

Domesticated approximately 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, sheep were among the first animals to be kept by humans for ongoing use rather than immediate consumption.
