Capybaras are the largest rodents on earth — semi-aquatic mammals native to South America, found in every country east of the Andes where permanent water is available. They are exceptionally social, living in groups of 10 to 20 individuals organized around a dominant male, with the whole group participating in raising young.
Capybaras are famously tolerant of other species — documented sharing their habitat peacefully with birds, monkeys, turtles, caimans, and an extraordinary range of animals that use them as a mobile resting platform. Their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives. They communicate through a range of clicks, whistles, barks, and purrs.
They are most active at dawn and dusk, and they thermoregulate by spending the hottest part of the day partially submerged in water.
