Tigers are the largest wild cats on earth and among the most solitary apex predators alive. Unlike lions, tigers operate alone — each individual claims and defends a territory that can span hundreds of square miles, marked through scent, scratch marks, and vocalizations that carry for miles through dense forest.

There are six surviving subspecies of tiger, all classified as endangered or critically endangered, with fewer than 4,000 individuals remaining in the wild. Tigers are powerful swimmers — unlike most cats, they actively seek water and have been documented swimming across rivers several miles wide.

Their striped coat is as unique as a human fingerprint; no two tigers share the same pattern.
