Lions are the only truly social member of the cat family — the only species that lives, hunts, and raises young as a coordinated group. A pride can include up to 40 individuals organized around a core of related females, with cubs raised communally and protected by the whole group.

Lions once ranged across Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. Today they occupy less than 8% of their historical range, with fewer than 25,000 remaining in the wild. They communicate through roars audible from 5 miles away, establishing territory and maintaining contact with pride members across vast distances.

Male lions' manes are a direct indicator of testosterone levels and overall health — darker manes signal stronger, more dominant individuals.
