Axolotls are a critically endangered salamander native to a single lake system in Mexico City — Xochimilco — and they are one of the most biologically remarkable animals alive.
Unlike most amphibians, axolotls remain in their larval aquatic form throughout their entire lives, a phenomenon called neoteny. They can regenerate complete limbs, portions of their heart, sections of their spinal cord, and parts of their brain — a regenerative capability unmatched in the vertebrate world.
Scientists have studied axolotl regeneration for decades in pursuit of applications for human tissue repair. There are estimated to be fewer than 1,000 wild axolotls remaining.
All The Fauna axolotl designs are for the person who rebuilds from nothing and arrives more complete each time.
