Otters are among the most charismatic and ecologically important aquatic mammals alive. Sea otters are a keystone species — their predation on sea urchins prevents the overgrazing of kelp forests, which support hundreds of marine species and absorb enormous quantities of carbon from the atmosphere.

There are 13 known species of otter, found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. River otters are highly social, living and hunting in family groups, and are documented using tools — including stones — to crack open shellfish, making them one of the few non-primate tool users.
